Stannite is found in tin-bearing hydrothermal veins throughout the world, most commonly in areas where magmatic activity and sedimentary deposits are present. It is usually found as a secondary mineral, formed from the weathering and oxidation of primary sulfide minerals such as chalcopyrite, galena and sphalerite.
