According to the classification of a famous Russian geologist Petr Borisov, which he suggested in 1956, and which is still most widely utilized, there are 5 types of shungite, depending on the percentage of carbon. Shungite I is the silver (or elite) shungite (more than 90%), shungite II - is Petrovsky shungite (60-80%), shungite III - is usual shungite (around 30-35%), which is mostly selling on the market. Shungites IV and V - are low-carbon varieties (less than 25%), which are utilized only for metallurgy.

Shungite is a deep-black, non-crystalline mineral consisting of more than 98 percent carbon.  It was first described from a deposit near Shunga village, in Karelia, Russia, from where it gets its name. Shungite has been utilized since the 18th-century to purify water, and people still follow that practice today. In the metaphysical world, shungite is thought to have detoxifying and purifying benefits.
