Shungite is a non-crystalline mineraloid consisting of mostly carbon. Shungite is black in color. Shungite is named for the area it was discovered, Shunga village in Karelia, Russia. Shungite has been used since the 18th century to purify water; Peter the Great in Russia used shungite in Russia's first spa. Shungite is rated between 2 and 3 on the Mohs hardness scale. In the metaphysical world, shungite is thought to have detoxifying and purfiying benefits.
