Shungite is a non-crystalline mineraloid consisting of mostly carbon and is rated between 2 and 3 on the Mohs hardness scale. Shungite is black in color and is named for the area it was discovered, Shunga village in Karelia, Russia.  Shungite has been utilized since the 18th century to purify water; Peter the Great in Russia utilized Shungite in Russia's first spa. In the metaphysical world, Shungite is thought to have detoxifying and purifying benefits.
