Various white Whelk shells. Featuring variants like Pear Whelk Shell and Left- Handed Whelk Shell.
Pear whelk is a species of sea snail, found in areas from the Caribbean to the Western Gulf of Mexico. The shell is thin, usually with a long siphonal canal and a short, flattened spire. The color variations usually have a cream background, but some can have similar coloration to the lightning whelk with axial brown streaks.
Left-Handed Whelks, Lightning Whelks, are a pale colored shell accented with brown stripes and they have either a tan or orange mouth opening. Left-Handed Whelk shells historically played a significant role in Native American cultures, because their left-side opening means their shell spirals clockwise rather than anti-clockwise. This is thought to signify light to darkness and birth to death in native beliefs, and the shells were utilized in both daily life and spiritual rituals.
The homes of the small creatures of the sea, shells can be utilized to stimulate intuition, sensitivity, imagination, and adaptability. The structure of the shell can help to enhance clarity in the mental processes and to provide, during decision-making, insight into which option to choose. It further promotes cooperation between the self and others. It enhances the assimilation of vitamin A and D.
