White Ammonite fossils embedded within the matrix. Desmophyllites are an extinct genus of ammonite. From South Dakota Cretaceous age rocks. Measurements are 8" x 5" x 4".
Desmophyllites are small desmoceratitid ammonite characterized by a smooth and very involute shell that lived during the Santonian to Maachstrictian stages of the Late Cretaceous. Shells of Desmophylites diphylloida from the upper Santonian are on order of 1.8 cm (0.7 in) in diameter. Those of Desmophylllites larteti from the upper Campanian are on order of 10.5 cm (~4 in) across.
Ammonites are one of the most recognizable fossils and are an extinct group of marine molluscs. Trace elements of aluminum, barium, chromium, copper, iron, magnesium, manganese, silicon, strontium, titanium and vanadium create variation. Ammonite fossilized spiral shells resemble tightly coiled ram's horns and get their name from the Egyptian god Ammon who is depicted wearing ram's horns. Ammolite is relatively soft for a gem, 3.5 on the Mohs Hardness Scale. Metaphysically, it is believed that the spiral draws in negative energy, filtering it through the chambers and releasing fresh, positive energy.
