Moonstone is a sodium potassium aluminum silicate that belongs to the feldspar group and is rated between 6 and 6.5 on the Mohs hardness scale. Its name comes from the luminous visual effect, called adularescence, caused by light diffraction within layers of the stone—similar to labradorite.
