Agate and Onyx are both varieties of layered chalcedony that differ only in the form of the bands. Agate has curved bands and onyx has parallel bands. Onyx primarily refers to the parallel banded variety of the silicate mineral chalcedony and is rated at a 7 on the Mohs hardness scale. The colors of its bands range from white to almost every color. 

Onyx is an excellent stone for initiating the modes of centering and alignment of the total person with the higher powers. It can be utilized to banish grief, to enhance self control, to stimulate the power of wise decision making, and to encourage happiness and good fortune.
