Lapis Lazuli, or Lapis for short, is a deep blue metamorphic rock utilized as a semi-precious stone that has been prized since antiquity for its intense color. The stone was utilized as jewelry and amulets in ancient Egypt. At the end of the Middle Ages, Lapis Lazuli began to be exported to Europe from Afghanistan. It was ground into powder and made into ultramarine, the finest and most expensive of all blue pigments. Many famous artworks from the 16th-19th century utilized the pigment of Lapis Lazuli for the blue, such as frescos of the Sistine Chapel in the Vatican, Girl with the Pearl Earring by Vermeer, and many more. Lapis Lazuli is rated between 5 and 5.5 on the Mohs hardness scale.
