Fossilized flowers are rare and are mostly found in sedimentary rock formations, especially in layers of fine-grained rock such as shale or siltstone. These rocks are formed from fine sediment that buried and preserved the flowers. Fossilized flowers are typically found in layers of rock that are millions of years old, such as those from the Cretaceous, Jurassic and Triassic periods. The preservation of fossilized flowers is often very delicate, and the flowers are often flattened and compressed.
