Obsidian is a naturally-occurring volcanic glass that can be deep-black to blackish-green in color. In the past, it was utilized to manufacture cutting and piercing tools, and it was once utilized experimentally as surgical scalpel blades. Obsidian is thought to aid in balancing energy in the physical body. 

 

Obsidian is a naturally occurring volcanic glass formed as an extrusive igneous rock and is rated between 5 and 6 on the Mohs hardness scale. Obsidian is produced when felsic lava extruded from a volcano cools rapidly with minimal crystal growth.  In the past, obsidian was utilized to manufacture cutting and piercing tools and it has been utilized experimentally as surgical scalpel blades. Metaphysically, Obsidian is associated with resolution; remedies shock and trauma.
